Writing this editorial is a special moment. It's a chance to look back and take stock of the past year and to recognise the progress made as, every day, each STIB employee gives their best to serve our customers.
Whether driving a bus, tightening a bolt, designing a new line or finalising the minutes of a meeting, every gesture helps to advance the company and mobility in Brussels. Like bricks in a wall, every action adds up to design and offer a service used by over a million people every day.
You are these million passengers who choose public transport to travel around Brussels. Thank you for your commitment and trust. You have contributed to the 376 million journeys made by STIB in 2023 and the more than 53 million kilometres travelled.
As mobility evolves, so do your needs, and to satisfy them, we're looking to the future. What vehicles will we need in 10 years' time and what depots will be needed to store and maintain them? How will the Brussels population change? What will be the new centres of attraction? These are the questions our predecessors asked themselves when they built the metro in the 1970s and that's what we're doing today, with our children and grandchildren in mind.
For example, we're ordering electric buses for a more breathable city, we're planning to replace our tram rails for greater comfort for users and local residents, we're applying eco-construction principles to our infrastructure and we're laying out new lines to meet the challenges of mobility. We're preparing for tomorrow today. At the same time, we're delivering on a number of daily challenges.
In 2023, we put the "Tram New Generation" into circulation, we opened line 18 between Uccle and Forest, laid two-thirds of the tracks for the future tram line 10, launched the Floya multimodal app and the digital Brupass. These are just some of the achievements of the past year that we invite you to discover.
So it is with great pride that we present this 2023 annual report. On behalf of all the STIB employees who keep Brussels moving every day and enable STIB to excel, we wish you an enjoyable read. We look forward to seeing you on our lines in 2024, for mobility that's resolutely focused on the future.
